Apple computer support for SOM faculty

The UNLV Office of Information Technology (OIT) manages Apple computers for the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine in the same way they support other departments.

💡 This support is for Mac computers only.
It does not include iPads or other iOS devices.


🌐 Internet through BYOD Wi-Fi

Apple computers can connect to BYOD Wi-Fi networks:

  1. Click the Wi-Fi symbol at the top of your screen.

  2. Choose UNLVMED BYOD or KSOM BYOD.

  3. At the prompt, enter your SOM username and password. Choose Join.

Limitations

  • BYOD networks cannot access SOM internal services:

    • network drives (G:\, H:\, K:\, etc)

    • network printers

      • printers can be leased and directly connected to Apple computers, submit request to SOM IT for assistance

    • patient care applications

      • UMC Epic is accessible from UMC Netscalar


🧰 Device Management with Jamf

All Apple computers used in the School of Medicine are added to UNLV’s system called Jamf, which helps with the following:

  • Deploying standard software

  • Security updates and operating system patches

  • Tracking device info (model, serial number, department, IP address, etc.)


🔐 Lost or Stolen Mac Devices

  • Devices can be locked remotely with a message showing UNLV contact information

  • 🚨 Jamf can also erase the Mac’s data remotely if the device is lost or stolen

A police report or written permission from a Dean, Chair, or Director is required to approve a remote wipe of a device.


🔑 Need Admin Access?

If you're prompted for administrator access while installing software, use the Self Service option:

Locate the Self Service application

This can be found in one of the following places:

  1. Dock > Launchpad

  2. Finder > Application

  3. Spotlight Search > Search "Self Service"

Under Make Me An Admin, select Run

In a few moments, a notification will appear advising you have administrative access for 15 minutes.

Try performing the action you requested again.
