KSOM VPN & Remote Desktop Access - Mac
Use of VPN is only needed when you are off-site & not connected to the SOM/UNLVMed networks.
Attempting to connect to VPN while on-site can cause significant errors and disruptions.
Required for Mac to Windows Connection
VPN - Cisco AnyConnect
Remote Desktop App
Connect to the KSOM network via VPN to remotely connect to your PC on-site.
Your SOM account username and password are required for VPN and remote desktop access.

The Mac installer package is not visible on the VPN website unless you are on a Mac.
Install VPN software on your Mac
1 | On your Mac, go to https://vpn.ksom.unlv.edu in your web browser. | |
2 | You will be prompted for your SOM username and password. Enter these credentials. → SOM Username: firstname.lastname | |
3 | Click the Download button to save the installation package. | |
4 | Locate and open the downloaded file. | |
5 | Open the AnyConnect installation package. | |
6 | Follow the prompts of the installation wizard. | |
7 | Click Agree. | |
8 | Click Install. | |
9 | Enter your Mac profile’s username and password to allow installation to continue. | |
10 | When the installation is complete, click Close. |
Install Microsoft Remote Desktop on your Mac
1 | On your Mac, find the Microsoft Remote Desktop app in the app store. Download the app. | |
2 | Open the Microsoft Remote Desktop app. Click Add PC. | |
3 | Adjust your settings to the settings provided here. General tab

If your SOM password changes, you will need to update your password in these settings to avoid locking your account. | |
7 | You will now see your PC as an option on the Microsoft Remote Desktop application. |
Connect to VPN and access your PC for regular use
1 | Connect to the KSOM Network via VPNFrom your taskbar, double-click the AnyConnect Client icon. | |
2 | The AnyConnect Client will open. Click Connect. | |
3 | When prompted, enter your SOM username and password. → SOM Username: firstname.lastname | |
4 | Once connected, the icon will show a lock symbol. | |
5 | Connect to Virtual DesktopOpen the Microsoft Remote Desktop app. If you have not already installed this, please disconnect from the VPN and download the Microsoft Remote Desktop app in the app store before moving on. | |
6 | Choose your computer. (pp-v####.unlvmedicine.net) | |
7 | When prompted, enter unlvmed\ followed by your SOM username and password. → SOM Username: firstname.lastname Please ensure you are using the backslash \ and not the forward slash / as the forward slash will not work. | |
8 | You will see this notice each time you connect. Click Continue. |
Disconnect
1 | Disconnect from Remote AccessClose all of your programs. | |
2 | On the remote computer, open the Windows start menu (bottom left corner) . Click on the profile icon and choose Sign Out. | |
3 | Disconnect from KSOM NetworkFrom the taskbar notification area, click on the AnyConnect icon. Choose Disconnect. |
