In this guide, you will learn how to:

  • Create breakout rooms during a live Zoom meeting, rather than in advance.

  • Assign participants to breakout rooms.

Creating Your Breakout Rooms

Only the host can assign participants to breakout rooms. The co-host can join and leave any breakout room, but only if they are originally assigned to a breakout room by the host.

  1. Start your meeting.

2. Click Breakout Rooms on the toolbar.

3. Select the number of rooms you would like to create, and how you want to assign your participants:

  • Automatically: Zoom splits up your participants evenly into the number of rooms that you designate.

  • Manually: Choose which participants you’d like in each room.

4. Click Create Rooms.

5. Your rooms will be created, but will not start automatically. You can manage the rooms prior to
starting them by following the instructions below.

Assigning Participants to Rooms

To assign participants to your rooms, select Assign next to the room you wish to assign, and select who you want to assign to that room. Repeat this for each room.

Once a participant has been assigned (manually or automatically), the number of participants will show in place of the Assign button.
