Configuring Spaces - Google Chat

Spaces in Google Chat are for conversations where people can come and go. Spacesare typically used for ongoing chats within groups of people. For example, rooms can be created for entire departments (Surgery) as well as smaller groups (Surgery - Front Desk Staff).

Creating a Space

1

Go to chat.google.com or open the Google Chat desktop app.

2

Click the plus sign next to Spaces on the left sidebar.

3

Choose Create space.

4

Configure your space and click Create.

  • NOTE: We recommend using a consistent naming scheme for your rooms.

    • For example: Surgery - Front Desk, Surgery - Providers, etc.

  • Add users to your space by searching their name or email address.

  • Set your preferred space access.

  • Use threaded replies allows for segmented conversation within a space. This helps with organizing conversations in a space, but is not required. However, you cannot change this once your space is created.

Space Management

To manage your space, open the Google Chat space and click the down arrow by its name to view the management menu.

You can change the name of the space, edit the members of the space, manage notifications, or leave the space entirely.
