Create Labels in Gmail

Labels are a simple and efficient way to keep your email inbox organized. Create labels to group specific emails together and keep your inbox free of clutter.

Create and Manage Labels

1

On the left sidebar of your inbox, expand the menu and click Manage Labels.

2

Go to the Labels section at the bottom of the page. Here you can choose to create a new label, edit or remove existing labels, and choose to show or hide the labels in your inbox.

Click Create new label.

3

Give the label a name.

If you’d like to nest this label under an existing label, check the Nest label under box and choose the appropriate parent label from the dropdown menu.

Add labels to individual emails

Open the email and click the Label button above the message. Choose the appropriate label from the list.

You can also move single or multiple emails from your inbox by selecting the messages and choosing either the Label option as explained above.

Remove an email from your inbox

To remove an email from your inbox, click the X next to the Inbox label near the email’s subject line.

Emails that are removed from your inbox but do not have any other labels associated with them will still be accessible in All Mail.
