Info

There are several ways to upload files and folders into Google Drive. Using Google Drive for Desktop is the quickest and easiest method of uploading large amounts of files at once.

  1. If you do not already have Google Drive for Desktop on your PC, download and install it here. If you need assistance with installation, please contact the Help Desk.

  2. Open File Explorer on your PC.

  3. Expand your Google Drive folders - you can create a specific folder(s) for the files you are moving if you’d like.

  4. Select the files you want to move. Holding the CTRL key while clicking allows you to select multiple files.

  5. Drag the files into the appropriate folder in your Google Drive.

  6. Depending on the size of the content, it may take quite a bit of time to upload. Consider uploading smaller batches of folders/files at a time instead of the entirety of your files.

What is a local file?

A local file is a file that lives on a specific computer rather than secure file storage.

Common local file locations:

  • Desktop

  • Documents

  • Downloads

Note

Files that are stored on your local computer are not saved to the network or backed up in any way.

To guarantee that your files are safe, they should be stored in a designated network file share or Google Drive, depending on your department’s preferences.

Network drives are backed up nightly.

  • H:/ - Your home directory is your personal file storage and is private to you.

  • G:/ - UNLV Health group and department shared file storage

  • K:/ - SOM group and department shared file storage

Option 2 - Save to Google Drive

Google Drive is another option for file storage and is backed up constantly. Files in My Drive are private to you unless you choose to share them. Google Shared Drives can be used for departmental/group file sharing.
